How to Create Custom Markups for the Bluebeam Tool Chest

Build a reusable markup from drawing geometry, preserve its appearance and metadata, and decide when a controlled BTX library is the better team standard.

What a Custom Tool Chest Markup Stores

A saved Tool Chest item is more than a picture. It can preserve the markup type, line and fill appearance, text settings, subject and other properties used when the tool is placed again. That makes a controlled Tool Chest useful for repeated drawing reviews, surveys, takeoffs and coordination markups.

Create the Markup on a Test PDF

Start on a non-production PDF with the correct page scale. Draw the base markup using Revu tools, then set its colour, line weight, fill, opacity, text and subject in the Properties panel. If the symbol combines several elements, select the elements and group them before saving so they place as one controlled item.

  1. 1Open a test PDF and confirm the page scale if the tool will measure length, area or volume.
  2. 2Draw the base shape, line, text or measurement markup.
  3. 3Apply the intended visual properties and a clear subject or label.
  4. 4Group multi-part geometry and test that it moves and copies as one item.
  5. 5Right-click the finished markup and add it to the intended Tool Chest set.
  6. 6Place the saved tool again and compare it with the original before using it on live work.

Choose Properties Mode or Drawing Mode Deliberately

Properties Mode reuses the saved appearance while allowing the new markup to follow the geometry you draw. Drawing Mode places the saved markup with its original geometry. Use Drawing Mode for fixed symbols such as devices and equipment markers. Use Properties Mode for lines, areas and other tools that must adapt to each drawing.

Give Every Tool Searchable Metadata

Use consistent subjects, labels and abbreviations so tools remain understandable in the Tool Chest and useful in the Markups List. A subject such as CCTV Camera is more useful than a generic subject such as Symbol. For team libraries, document the abbreviation, subject, intended mode, discipline and revision owner.

Test Before You Export a BTX File

Place every new tool on a clean test sheet. Check colour, scale, rotation, snapping, grouping, subject and Markups List output. Export the set to BTX, import it into a separate test profile or workstation, and verify that the imported copy behaves the same way. Keep a dated source copy before replacing a team standard.

When a Ready-Made Tool Set Is Faster

Building a few company-specific tools is practical. Building and validating a complete trade library takes longer because every tool needs naming, appearance, placement and import testing. A ready-made BTX pack is useful when the required electrical, CCTV, security, fire alarm, AV/data or estimating symbols are standard enough to reuse, while custom work can focus on company-specific exceptions.
