Bluebeam Error Loading Tool Set: Safe Recovery Steps
Recover a Bluebeam Revu Tool Set when the Tool Chest reports Error Loading Tool Set, without deleting the only copy of your custom tools.

In this guide:
What the Error Means
Bluebeam documents this message when Revu cannot load the BTX file associated with a Tool Set. The problem may affect one Tool Set while the rest of Revu continues to open. Protect the existing configuration before resetting or replacing anything.
Back Up Revu Before Recovery
Create a settings backup before attempting the reset workflow:
- 1Open Revu and go to Revu > Preferences, or press Ctrl+K.
- 2Select Admin in the left sidebar.
- 3Under Options, select Backup.
- 4Save the backup ZIP to a known local folder and copy it to a second location.
- 5Close project PDFs after saving any pending work.
Reset and Re-import the Tool Set
Return to Preferences > Admin and select Reset. Revu closes and reopens with default settings. Extract the backup ZIP, open Tool Chest, choose Manage Tool Sets, select Import and open the required BTX file from the backup. Test several tools on a non-production PDF before returning to live project work.
If the Error Returns
Do not repeatedly reset the same installation without preserving new backups. Bluebeam notes that a corrupt associated profile can also cause persistent problems. Test the BTX in a clean Revu profile, confirm that Revu is current, and involve the IT administrator when the installation or Tool Set is centrally deployed.
Protect Purchased Tool Sets
Keep the original purchased ZIP unchanged. Import from a working copy and export customised project versions under new names. This leaves a clean baseline available if a local Tool Chest or profile becomes damaged.
